boy am i way behind...same story, different year. been a little busy, so busy that i just put up halloween decorations today.
genetics...no i'm not going to get into chromosomes and all that jazz. i want to talk about something a little more basic. when you first find out your pregnant, you begin to wonder what your baby is going to be like. what are they going to look like, what is their personality going to be like, what kinds of things will he/she like. well, the same is true even with a child who has down syndrome. but it seems you have a lot more questions and a lot more concern. will the child look different, will he/she even look like us, will he be able to do simple things like play ball, write, talk, etc. will he/she even take after our personalities or will this child be someone completely different because of ds.
i'm here to tell you, your child with ds is going to be a combination of both you and your spouse just like any other child. henry has a double dose of bull headedness that he inherited. he loves sports like his dad. he loves art like me. he loves music like both of us. he has is a joker like both of us. he looks like both of our families. all his chromosomes, even the extra one has justin and mine dna.
i always tell parents, when they ask me what is their child going to be like, your child is going to be a combination of the both of you. and to drive my point home and put worries aside i tell them something very simple....
henry has so far been in the 90th percentile and above for height and weight on a TYPICAL CHART. why does this have any meaning? well children with down syndrome have their own growth chart because they tend to be smaller. now i don't say this to brag that my kid is a beast. haha. trust me there have been some disadvantages to having a tall child. i say this because henry has tall genes. his grandfathers are well over six feet. most of his uncles and great uncles are over six feet as well. it's a simple way to show parents, yes your child has down syndrome...but for the most part he's/she's a child that has 100% your dna. he/she is going to be typical in more ways than not. and all the things you read, all the stereotypes you hear about doesn't mean your child is going to be forced into some ds mold. will henry always be tall, who knows. i hope so, otherwise my go to story goes out the window. ;)
down syndrome fact of the day:
Myth: People with Down syndrome have severe cognitive delays.
Truth: Most people with Down syndrome have cognitive delays that are mild to moderate. IQ is not an adequate measure of the functional status of people with Down syndrome. People with Down syndrome have great potential if given opportunities.
